Tips for adjusting after daylight saving time ends

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — As daylight saving time comes to an end, Nevadans are seeing brighter mornings and earlier sunsets.

Although the difference is only an hour, Las Vegas psychologist and therapist Dr. Julie Robinson says the shift can have a noticeable impact on daily life and mood.

“It really affects our natural rhythm; our circadian rhythms are affected by even this hourly change,” Robinson said. “It can make us feel frustrated, irritable, anxious and just plain uncomfortable without even knowing why.”

Robinson explains that this transition period can be stressful for both children and adults. The early onset of darkness in the evening can increase feelings of fatigue, and changing daylight hours can make many people feel sluggish.

For those looking to adapt, Robinson recommends simulating sunlight indoors.

“You can use a lamp that you can buy on Amazon that will simulate sunlight. Psychologically, you will feel like you are in the sun,” she said. “Another way to help yourself is to get more sleep—try to do whatever your body needs to do to match your natural rhythm.”

Along with using light therapy, Robinson suggests taking time to practice self-care and patience. Seasonal transitions, especially as the holidays approach, can add stress to an already challenging adjustment.

“There’s a lot going on,” she added. “With this additional change, you or your child may feel irritable, upset, or moody without even realizing why. Be kind to yourself.”

Here are some more tips:

  • Gradual adjustment: Try going to bed 10 to 15 minutes earlier each night to gradually adjust to the new time.
  • Go outside: Exposure to natural sunlight, even during cooler months, can help regulate your internal clock.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol: Reducing the amount of these stimulants, especially in the evening, can improve sleep quality and make shifts easier.
  • Follow the regime: Setting consistent bedtimes and wake-up times can help you feel more balanced during the transition.

Experts say patience and awareness are key. After some adjustments and self-compassion, many find that the impact of the time change is short-lived.
