US Presidential Election 2024: Joe Biden invites Donald Trump to the White House for a smooth transfer of power

US Presidential Election 2024: Joe Biden invites Donald Trump to the White House for a smooth transfer of power

US President Joe Biden and the winner of the 2024 US presidential election, Donald Trump, are scheduled to meet at the White House this Wednesday (November 13), according to a White House spokesman on Saturday (November 9).

Trump, who defeated his Democratic rival and incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris, is scheduled to take office on January 20. “At President Biden’s invitation, President Biden and President-elect Trump will meet in the Oval Office on Wednesday,” the White House Press reports. Secretary of State Karine Jean-Pierre announced.

That Oval Office meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (local time), with Trump still weeks away from returning to office in January. In her concession speech the day after Election Day (November 6), Harris addressed her supporters after her surprise loss to Trump, saying: “Now is not the time to give up. It’s time to roll up your sleeves.”

Speaking at Howard University, a visibly emotional Harris said: “While I recognize this election, I do not recognize the struggles that fueled this campaign.”

In his first public statement since the election, President Biden addressed the nation from the White House, emphasizing that his administration will work to ensure a smooth transition of power.

“I spoke with President-elect Trump yesterday to congratulate him on his victory and assured him that I am directing my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. This is what the American people deserve,” Biden said.

The US President concluded his speech by reflecting on the work accomplished during his time in office, saying: “Together we have changed America for the better. Now we have 74 days to complete the deadline, our deadline. Let’s make every day count. This is our responsibility to the American people.”

Exit polls showed the economy and inflation were the top concerns for American voters in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biden, 81, canceled his re-election bid in July due to age-related concerns and pressure from members of his own party.

Following the election results, Biden congratulated Trump and invited him to the White House, a stark contrast to how Donald treated Joe after he won the 2020 election. Notably, Trump never officially conceded to Biden when he lost in 2020.
