Suspect fired during police chase and standoff in central Alabama, ALEA reports

A Montgomery County man has been arrested after authorities say he shot at law enforcement officers during a standoff in central Alabama.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday, an ALEA trooper attempted to stop a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck on US 231 near County Road 7707 in Pike County. The driver did not stop and a chase ensued.

The chase ended when the driver crashed on Alabama Highway 94 in Montgomery County.

Following the accident, a standoff occurred between the driver and law enforcement.

ALEA State Bureau of Investigation, SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Unit responded, along with Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies.

Maxie Doyal Evans, 47, of Ramer, was armed with a handgun and fired at officers, ALEA Lt. Jeremy Burkett said. No one was hurt. After negotiations, Burkett said Evans was taken into custody without further incident.

Evans was taken to Southern Baptist Medical Center in Montgomery for treatment.

He faces attempted eluding and weapons charges, Burkett said. Evans will be booked into the Pike County Jail upon his release from the hospital.
