Storm fends off cross-code interest as key figure re-signs

Melbourne has signed football mastermind Frank Ponissi until the end of the 2029 season, ensuring a smooth transition when NRL coach Craig Bellamy calls time.

A highly rated football manager has been on the radar of Brisbane’s NRL rivals as they seek a fresh start under new coach Michael Maguire.

He was also pursued by Melbourne neighbors AFL giants Collingwood for a code change, but the Storm announced a long-term contract on Wednesday.

Ponissi joined the Storm 17 years ago and formed a highly successful partnership with Bellamy, winning three premierships and reaching finals 16 times.

Their last premiership came in 2020 when they lost to four-peat champions Penrith in that year’s grand final.

Bellamy signed a five-year contract in 2022 that allows him to decide each year whether he will continue in the head coaching role next season or move into a coaching director role, but Ponissi is locked in.

He has taken over the management of the Storm men’s program and junior representative programs and said he is looking forward to seeing these players realize their potential.

“I’ve enjoyed this year, I enjoy leading the way, the challenges of this role,” Ponissi, 60, told AAP.

“Every few years a new group of players comes along and their enthusiasm and energy definitely wears off.”

Melbourne have a number of players out of contract, led by star defender Ryan Papenhuyzen, while utility player Tyrann Wishart and playmaker Jonah Pezet are also attracting attention.
