The second-longest game in college football history ended with Georgia beating Georgia Tech 44-42 in eight overtimes on Friday night.

The Bulldogs won after running back Nate Frazier ended the eighth OT with a run up the middle, likely clinching a spot in the College Football Playoff in the process.

Georgia Tech, which led 17-0 at halftime, took a 27-13 advantage with 5:37 remaining in regulation after quarterback Haynes King’s 11-yard touchdown run.

However, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck connected with receiver Dominic Lovett on a 17- and three-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. The second score occurred with 1:01 left in regulation time.

The second touchdown capped a 32-yard drive that began after Dan Jackson forced a King fumble recovered by Chaz Chambliss.

Georgia Tech’s final attempt to win ended in failure at the Georgia 46-yard line after fourth down failed with four seconds remaining. Beck’s Hail Mary attempt was never successful after the sack, sending the game to OT.

The in-state rivals soon went into overtime. Georgia struck first after Beck found London Humphries for a 14-yard touchdown, but the Yellow Jackets responded when King found Eric Singleton Jr. for a 12-yard touchdown.

Georgia Tech got the ball to start the second overtime, and King scored on a one-yard run set up by Malik Rutherford’s 20-yard run. The Yellow Jackets had to apply the overtime rules twice a second, but were unsuccessful.

Georgia wasted no time in the second overtime after Cash Jones caught a 25-yard pass from Beck to tie the game at 40.

Georgia’s two-point attempt was also unsuccessful, sending the game into a third overtime.

At this stage the teams had to alternate two-point attempts.

Neither team achieved success in either the third or fourth overtime. Georgia scored first in the fifth overtime when Beck found Dillon Bell on a pass.

Needing a conversion to keep the game going, the Yellow Jackets found success when King hit Rutherford for two.

And so the teams went to the sixth OT.

Georgia broke through the middle and sacked King to stop the Yellow Jackets’ attempt. Beck responded by trying to find Arian Smith behind the end zone.

However, UGA receiver Dillon Bell sent the ball to the goal line, thinking (understandably) that the pass was intended for him. Smith was unable to catch the deflected ball, sending both teams into a seventh overtime.

Both quarterbacks tried to push the ball into the frame, but Beck and King’s attempts were stopped.

The eighth overtime began with King rushing to avoid a powerful Georgia pass on a blitz and desperately rushing to the far corner of the end zone, only to have the ball go out of bounds.

Frazier then ended the game, which was the 118th rivalry dating back to 1893.

No one will be forgetting this edition of Pure Old Fashioned Hate anytime soon.

Not lost in the convoluted nature of the game and eight overtimes was the fact that Georgia, a 19.5-point favorite, narrowly lost and was down three points by halftime.

The resilient Bulldogs pulled off a huge win, but Georgia did not inspire confidence in its pursuit of a national championship.

Fans were ultimately disappointed with Georgia, calling the team overrated due to its performance.

The SEC is overrated and Georgia is hot garbage.

In boxing, King has five touchdowns (two passing, three rushing). He completed 26 of 36 passes for 303 yards and rushed for 110 yards on 24 carries. Needless to say, he did everything he could to create a stunning upset.

Beck finished the day with 297 yards and five touchdowns on 28-of-43 passing.

Georgia will now play the winner of Texas at Texas A&M in the SEC Championship Game next Saturday, December 7th. The Yellow Jackets will finish the regular season with a 7-5 record but will play in a yet-to-be-determined bowl until the end of 2024. campaign.
