This week we are joined by Swedish MEP Thomas Thobe from the European People’s Party, Danish MEP.

Kira Peter-Hansen from the Greens and Dutch-Spanish MEP Raquel García Hermida van der Walle from Renew Europe.

The big news of the week in Strasbourg was that Ursula von der Leyen’s team received approval from the European Parliament, allowing her new European Commission to begin work within days.

Raquel Garcia Hermida van der Walle was pleased with the news.

“I’m glad we have a coalition agreement. This was one of the main points for Renew. I’m most excited that we can get to work because we saw Donald Trump already packing his supposedly gold-plated moving boxes. to get into the White House, and we were still fighting here,” she said.

President von der Leyen told MEPs that the first 100 days of the new Commission will be critical.

“I think for anyone who looks at European politics, 5 months ago we had elections. I think citizens expect us to “get to work,” said Tomas Tobe.

Even though new faces are moving into the Berlaymont Hotel in Brussels, the same problems prevail. This week, MEPs also discussed the problem of stigmatization of LGBT communities in Hungary and beyond.

In 2021, the Hungarian National Assembly adopted significant amendments to the child protection law, which the Commission and 16 Member States consider to be contrary to EU values.

“They can win elections by targeting transgender people, targeting gay people. This is a way for them to win elections and it’s really disgusting,” Garcia told Hermida van der Walle.
